Alta Gracia Sweat-Free Clothing Arrives in University Bookstores

This week, participating college and university bookstores will begin stocking clothing made by workers in the Dominican Republic’s innovative Alta Gracia factory.  Workers there are guaranteed a living wage and the right to organize in a pathbreaking agreement with the manufacturer Knights Apparel that is being monitored by the Workers Rights Consortium.  A recent study of Alta Gracia by Professor John M. Kline funded by the Kalmanovitz Initiative concluded that if successful the Alta Gracia factory could “initiate a competitive ‘race to the top’ in labor standards that would most benefit people now mired in poverty at the bottom.”   The Alta Gracia apparel is now available at the Georgetown University bookstore.   To see the Alta Gracia workers themselves explain their hopes for this project, check out this video produced by the Workers Rights Consortium:
