New Report on DC Restaurant Industry

February 10, 2011

On Monday, February 14th, the Restaurant Opportunities Centers United (ROC) will release reports that document restaurant worker conditions in DC, LA and Miami.  These groundbreaking studies offer a comprehensive look at inequality and opportunity in the restaurant industry.

In DC, ROC will host a breakfast summit at a local restaurant, which will convene workers, employers, advocates, policy makers, academics and unions to discuss employment and labor issues affecting the restaurant industry.  In light of the report’s findings, speakers will explore possibilities for improving workers’ lives through public policy, organizing and advocacy.

Speakers will include Phil Mendelson, DC Councilmember At-Large; Barbara Ehrenreich, author of Nickeled and Dimed; Andy Shallal, owner of Eatonville and Busboys & Poets; Ron Rockwell, founder of, and the Association of Independent Restaurants; Algernon Austin, Economic Policy Institute; and Celeste Montforton, School of Health and Health Services, George Washington University.

If you are interested in attending the summit, please RSVP to ROC’s DC office at 202-559-7496 or online.  If you are unable to attend, ROC, CLASP and Family Values at Work will be hosting an audio conference call from 3-4pm EST on February 14 to discuss the report and ways to translate its findings into effective solutions for workers.  You can register for the call here.
